ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION PROGRAM

The goal of the environmental educational outreach component of the Conservancy is to foster appreciation of the natural resources of the San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve and its watershed and support for its continued preservation and enhancement through a broad-based program designed to reach all segments of the community.

Educational topics generally addressed include the natural resources and the biological value of the reserve, human history and man's continuing impact on the habitat, community benefits of aesthetics, economics, health, and recreation, and information regarding the Conservancy and its mission.

Guided Nature Walks at San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve

The Conservancy serves over 2,500 people annually on free, guided nature walks at the reserve. These walks involve classes from kindergarten to college, special birding groups, adult groups, scouts, and church groups, and the general public. To arrange for a docent-led nature walk for your class, youth or adult group call 760-436-3944 or email [  mab4@sanelijo.org ]. Education guides and materials are available.

Just as there are manners appropriate for visits to museums, there are guidelines to observe when visiting an ecological reserve. These rules of etiquette follow the "Wilderness Ethic".

To conserve the value of the reserve please:

Use reserve entrances and stay on designated trails.
It doesn't take much off-trail activity to trample sensitive plants and disturb nesting or resting birds and animals. Also, the trail provides a clear view of where you step, a good consideration in a habitat that supports rattlesnakes.

Leave only footprints, take only memories.
All plants, animals and artifacts, including shells, are protected in the reserve. Replace what rocks, shells or sticks you pick up and pack out any litter. Dog owners are required to remove their pet's waste to a proper receptacle.

Respect wildlife.
Walk quietly along the trail to avoid disturbing wildlife and other hikers.

To make the most of your visit:

Prepare your group for the field trip ahead of time. Give students a richer experience by reviewing the wilderness ethic, your expectations for the class and appropriate educational subjects before arriving for your tour.

Choose a convenient and appropriate trailhead to begin your tour.
The Nature Center has a parking lot, restrooms, water fountain and shaded benches. It is connected to a one-mile loop trail. All other trailheads have parking along the street and have no restrooms or drinking water, although they have the advantage of longer walks and different habitats.

Dress appropriately.
Comfortable walking shoes, a hat and sunscreen, and drinking water are recommended. Check the weather forecast and bring rain gear as needed. A light drizzle on winter days gives a different look to the wetlands.

Bring a journal or small notebook for sketching and taking field notes.
A pleasant activity to include in your visit is to sit quietly and observe the environment around you. What do you smell, hear, feel and see? The Conservancy has a limited number of binoculars available. Please make arrangements for their use ahead of time.

Divide into small groups of 10 or less with adult supervision.
Allow the docent to lead the group keeping ahead of the students. Let the docent know ahead of time if you have specific goals in mind or any time constraints. Ask the adult chaperone to bring up the rear. It is the responsibility of the teacher or adult chaperone for any disciplinary actions.
